People in helping professions—such as firefighters, emergency medical technicians, doctors, and nurses—are increasingly exposed to aggression or even violent attacks. Individuals under the influence of alcohol or drugs, or those with mental health conditions, pose an additional risk. But impatient family members or even bystanders also frequently resort to violence against first responders.

This presentation provides a practical and well-founded examination of the topic of self-defense in situations where physical assault is a potential risk during operations. Drawing on many years of experience, legal frameworks such as self-defense and emergency assistance are clearly explained and linked to realistic operational scenarios.

In addition, a nuanced examination of the ethical and moral responsibilities of uniformed emergency responders is provided, particularly in the tension between personal safety, professional conduct, and societal expectations.

The goal is to strengthen confidence in decision-making, reflect on decision-making processes under pressure, and create a clear understanding of legally permissible and situationally appropriate behavior.
